Asana MCP Server

Asana users can find tasks, update projects, and organize dependencies through MCP clients such as Claude Desktop. An optional read-only mode lets them inspect workspace data with write tools disabled.

Overview

Project reviews and task triage in Asana can begin with workspace discovery, project name matching, or the authenticated user's My Tasks list. Task search includes filters for completion, assignees, attachments, blocking relationships, and custom fields. Users can also retrieve a project's task list with pagination, inspect sections and task counts, and read task comments or project status updates. These tools connect the Asana API to an MCP client, including Claude Desktop, for questions about ongoing work.

For changes, mcp-server-asana provides task and project creation and editing, task comments, and project status publishing or deletion. Work can be organized through subtasks, parent assignments, dependencies, tags, and project sections; existing tasks can also be added to or removed from projects. The implementation runs on Node and communicates over stdio, and requires an Asana access token. Setting READ_ONLY_MODE to true disables write operations and the create-task prompt, leaving read tools available for workspace inspection.

mcp-server-asana setup notes

  • mcp-server-asana records stdio only; confirm a network transport upstream before planning remote access.
