Overview
Workflow authoring starts with natural-language requests in Claude Desktop or Cursor, while the builder exposes n8n operations through MCP. Users can browse workflow metadata, filter for active workflows, retrieve definitions, and create or modify workflows. Activation, deactivation, deletion, and manual execution are also available. Environment routing lets users address development, staging, production, or custom instances, with separate API keys per environment. Tag tools support retrieving, creating, renaming, and deleting labels used to organize workflows.
Execution management covers filtered run history, details for an individual execution, and deletion of execution records. Retries create a new execution and apply only to runs with error status. Credential schemas describe fields and validation rules for creating service credentials; credentials can also be deleted. Reading or updating an individual credential returns guidance rather than carrying out the operation, with changes using deletion followed by creation. Removing a credential also requires updating workflows that depend on it. Partial workflow updates similarly provide guidance because PATCH is unsupported by the n8n API; actual edits use the workflow update tool.
