N8n Workflow Builder MCP Server

n8n-workflow-builder connects teams' AI assistants to n8n for natural-language automation management. Its MCP tools create and run workflows, inspect executions, organize tags, manage credentials, and generate security audits.

Overview

Workflow creation, activation, and execution can be handled from an AI assistant through n8n-workflow-builder. Assistants can browse workflow listings, retrieve definitions by ID, and construct workflows from nodes and their connections. Existing workflows can be updated or deleted, enabled for automatic execution, or deactivated. A combined action creates and activates a workflow, while manual execution remains a separate tool. To investigate runs, assistants can filter execution listings, page through results, retrieve detailed execution data, and remove individual execution records.

Tag tools support creating, inspecting, renaming, and deleting labels, plus reading or changing the tags assigned to a workflow. Credential tools expose schemas so an assistant can check the fields needed for a credential type before creating credentials; deletion is also supported. A further tool generates security audit reports for the n8n instance. Teams can connect clients such as Claude Desktop or Cline to cloud-hosted or self-hosted n8n using an instance address and an API key with appropriate permissions. The server uses stdio for MCP communication.

n8n-workflow-builder setup notes

  • n8n-workflow-builder records stdio only; confirm a network transport upstream before planning remote access.
