Best Files & Documents MCP Servers
Files and document servers give assistants access to material stored outside the conversation. A project may expose a local directory, connect to a document platform, or read a particular file format. Reading, searching, converting, and editing are separate capabilities, so begin with the operation your task needs. An integration that can list filenames may not understand document contents, and a converter may not preserve every feature of the original file.
Limit filesystem access to an explicit working directory where the server supports it, and use copies when testing write or conversion tools. Check how the project handles large files, unsupported formats, and paths outside its configured scope. Documents can contain confidential information or hostile instructions; treat their contents as data to inspect, not authority over the agent. For hosted storage, review the service account's permissions and whether shared folders broaden access unexpectedly. Compare runtime requirements, supported transports, and the quality of returned text. Keep original files and a clear review step so that automated transformations remain understandable and recoverable when a result is incomplete or incorrect.
