Overview
Workbook operations identify the file through an absolute path, with a sheet name selecting where sheet-specific work takes place. Excel MCP Server can enumerate the sheets in a file, then read selected ranges in pages. A read may return formulas instead of their values, or include cell-style details when requested. Its paging limit is configurable and defaults to 4,000 cells. Supported formats include the xlsx and xlsm workbook variants, together with xltx and xltm templates. The listed macro-enabled formats describe file compatibility; the README does not claim a macro-execution capability.
For changes, the server accepts values for a chosen range and can create the destination sheet as part of writing. A value beginning with an equals sign represents a formula. Other operations copy an existing sheet or turn a range into a named table. Styling is applied through a two-dimensional array aligned with the target cells, with null entries leaving a cell's style unchanged. The available styling groups address numeric presentation, fills, fonts, and borders. Platform-specific behavior matters: both live editing and screenshot capture are documented only for Windows. The npm-based local setup needs Node.js 20.x or above, with a Windows shell wrapper shown separately from the other-platform configuration. Smithery installation is an additional option. The project uses the MIT license.
Install & configure
Requirements
- Node.js version 20.x or above
- MCP client able to launch the npm package
npx --yes @negokaz/excel-mcp-serverThe command and flags match the README configuration for other platforms. Its Windows configuration instead launches cmd with /c, then npx and the same package flags. Tool calls use an absolute workbook path. The paging environment key is documented with a default value of 4000.
Examples are translated from the published configuration. Supply your own credentials and verify requirements in the upstream README. Remote connectors are shown only where a supported configuration format is known.
Config file · macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
Use Settings → Developer → Edit Config when available. Do not assume a Linux configuration path; check the client documentation for your platform. Remote servers use the app’s connector flow when supported, not the local stdio file shown here. Merge this example with existing settings; do not overwrite unrelated servers.

The project file uses mcpServers. For user scope, use claude mcp add --scope user rather than assuming .mcp.json in your home directory is the user configuration. Tools
Source: repository README. Tool descriptions are a documented snapshot, not a live capability check.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| excel_describe_sheets | Discover the sheet information associated with a workbook file. |
| excel_read_sheet | Inspect a paginated cell range, choosing whether formulas or styling details are included. |
| excel_copy_sheet | Create a new worksheet by copying a specified source sheet. |
| excel_write_to_sheet | Populate a range with values or formulas, with an option to create the destination sheet. |
| excel_create_table | Define a named table over a chosen worksheet range. |
| excel_format_range | Assign styles cell by cell using an array aligned to the selected range. |
| excel_screen_capture | On Windows, obtain a paginated screenshot of the requested sheet range. |
Names, permissions, and defaults can change. Check the current upstream documentation before granting access.
Use cases
- Find workbook sheets, then inspect a bounded range before making changes.
- Review formulas or style metadata instead of reading only displayed values.
- Populate a new sheet and give its data a named table range.
- Copy a worksheet or apply per-cell presentation changes.
- Capture a paginated sheet image when working on Windows.
Strengths
- Pairs paginated inspection with range-based writing and styling.
- Covers both ordinary and macro-enabled workbook and template formats.
- Supports table creation and sheet duplication alongside direct cell updates.
Limitations
- Screenshot capture and live editing are not documented for non-Windows platforms.
- The npm launch requires Node.js 20.x or a newer release.
