Overview

Within a VSCode workspace, vscode-as-mcp-server connects file exploration, editing, and diagnostic feedback to MCP clients such as Claude Desktop. The list_directory tool displays a tree that omits entries covered by .gitignore, while text_editor can read selected line ranges, replace text, create files, insert content, and undo edits from backups. Proposed model changes are presented as diffs for acceptance, rejection, or feedback. code_checker retrieves workspace diagnostics from language services, and focus_editor brings a file and cursor location into view without returning its contents.

Terminal work runs through execute_command, with foreground or background execution, timeout settings, output capture, and exit status reporting. get_terminal_output retrieves current or historical output by terminal ID, supporting follow-up on longer-running tasks. Debugging tools list active sessions and start, restart, or stop sessions. The extension also supports URL previews in VSCode's browser and switching the MCP server between open editor windows through the status bar. Its experimental relay exposes tools from VSCode's built-in MCP servers to external clients.
