steampipe-mcp

Steampipe MCP Server

Cloud and security teams can use steampipe-mcp to investigate Steampipe data through AI assistants. It exposes table and plugin discovery alongside read-only SQL queries, connecting to local Steampipe or Turbot Pipes workspaces.

Overview

EC2 inventory checks and IAM key reviews can start by inspecting the Steampipe data available to an assistant. Through steampipe_plugin_list, an assistant can discover installed plugins; steampipe_plugin_show adds installation details such as version, configuration, and memory limits. Table discovery uses steampipe_table_list, with schema and pattern filters to narrow results. The steampipe_table_show tool then supplies column definitions, types, and descriptions so the assistant can inspect a table before constructing a query.

With that context, steampipe_query runs read-only queries in PostgreSQL syntax. Natural-language requests can lead to reports pairing EC2 instances with EBS volumes, checks on IAM access-key age, or reviews of S3 public access, logging, and encryption. The included best_practices prompt covers query construction, column selection, caching, and troubleshooting, including guidance on CTEs rather than joins. A status resource exposes the database connection string and whether the connection is active. The same workflow can use a running local Steampipe installation or a Turbot Pipes workspace.
