Overview

Forum exploration in discourse-mcp starts with a chosen Discourse site, selected during a session or fixed when the server starts. Agents can search discussions, narrow topic lists by category, tags, status, dates, or personal tracking state, and read topic details or individual posts. User lookup and paginated post history provide a view of participant activity, while separate tools retrieve chat channel messages and saved drafts. Categories and tags can also be listed.

For administrative work, an admin API key is required to list users and inspect or execute Data Explorer queries. Query inspection exposes SQL and parameters; execution returns tabular results and runs within a read-only transaction. The server defaults to read-only operation, with post, topic, category, and user creation available only after write access is explicitly enabled and authentication is configured. User API keys are supported alongside admin keys, with user-specific permissions. The MCP connection uses stdio, and optional remote tool discovery can add tools exposed by the selected forum.
