What you can do with ArXiv in Claude Code

A focused arXiv workflow from filtered discovery to locally stored, readable papers.

  • Find papers within a topic, category, and date range.
  • Use guided prompts for comparisons or literature reviews.

Before you start: ArXiv in Claude Code

  • Python 3.11+
  • uv

ArXiv Claude Code configuration

  1. Choose Claude Code configuration scope

For ArXiv MCP Server, open Project scope: .mcp.json at the repository root. Project JSON: merge into mcpServers; user scope: use the CLI.

  2. Add ArXiv MCP Server to Claude Code

Use the arxiv-mcp-server entry below in mcpServers. Keep ArXiv MCP Server's documented stdio connection fields and your other Claude Code entries.

  3. Check ArXiv MCP Server in Claude Code

ArXiv MCP Server: Inspect claude mcp list and /mcp status.

Troubleshooting ArXiv in Claude Code

  • If ArXiv MCP Server fails to start, check uv, the working directory, and Claude Code's selected scope; inspect claude mcp list and /mcp.
  • ArXiv MCP Server uses stdio here: Claude Code must keep the configured process running; protocol output belongs on stdout and diagnostics on stderr.
  • Known limitation: PDF-only papers need the additional PDF dependency extra.
  • Known limitation: Local semantic search is experimental and requires extra dependencies.
  • Known limitation: Untrusted paper text can carry prompt-injection instructions.
  • General Claude Code troubleshooting lives in the /clients/claude-code guide.
